CGiii Comment

Sun City in South Africa is a huge resort with a disco, casino and swimming pools just two hours north of Johannesburg. Opened in 1979, Sun City was not only the "disco of apartheid" but also an imitation Las Vegas. It became notorious as the epitome of apartheid culture. The film SUNNY LAND by director team Aljoscha Weskott and Marietta Kesting is a drama-documentary essay that examines Sun City, and with it, the culture of apartheid. Sun City was built when the apartheid system was still in full swing. It unwittingly became a laboratory for radical political experiments: a zone which was simultaneously real and unreal. "SUNNY LAND is the exact opposite of a conventional documentary about a dark place from South Africa's past. Instead, it works like a psychedelic drug in cinematic form, expanding consciousness in the here and now." (Dorothee Wenner, Catalogue Berlinale/International Forum of New Cinema)
