This is Gay Propaganda: LGBT Rights & the War in Ukraine

Toronto-based filmmaker Marusya Bociurkiw brings us the Canadian premiere of her latest documentary, This is Gay Propaganda, providing a glimpse into queer lives affected by the 2014 Ukrainian Revolution and the harsh conditions endured following the military conflict with Russia. It was this event that introduced the “gay propaganda law,” criminalizing homosexuality in Ukraine and justifying legal persecution, hate crimes, and physical violence towards queer and trans* people.

Bociurkiw traces the path of human rights violations to the brave and defiant acts of queers and allied activists creating safe houses to protect each other. Engaging, ardent personal testimonies capture an important moment in the reshaping of a movement and the courageous resistance at the heart of LGBTQ Ukraine.
