CGiii Comment

For actress and sign language teacher Miriam, hearing is what sets her apart. With a deaf girlfriend, parents and friends, her audial capacity defines her place in the world; so when it starts to diminish, Miriam rallies against the change. Can she stop it? And should she?

Adriana Llabres gives an indelible performance as a young woman caught in a maelstrom of emotions, in Diego del Rio’s assured debut feature film. Llabres has the audience captivated by Miriam’s changing place in her world, as she must re-evaluate her work, hobbies and love in the context of her deteriorating sense. Del Rio tells the story with a confidence that belies his newness, aided by cinematographer Octavia Arauz’s depiction of sun-soaked Mexican cityscapes. Sound designers Miguel Hernandez and Mario Martinez guide us brilliantly through a changing sonic path, filling the film with sounds that hold increasing significance as Miriam’s condition changes; while also making space for the silence, and our evaluation of it.

All The Silence excels by both depicting and placing us in an experience foreign for most of us. A rare cinematographic experience in the independent sector, it may change the way you think, feel – and even what you hear.
