With a soundtrack of backstage conversations between female dancers, Baby Doll is an experimental look at the seedy and often misogynistic world of strippers working at the Baby Doll Lounge in Lower Manhattan in the early 1980s. Hughes Freeland was one of many women of the New York underground whose post-punk feminist films rejected traditional morality and narrative codes of representation to address themes of street harassment, sexual violence, voyeurism, and sex work.
