Bathory: Countess of Blood

Country: UK, Language: English, 141 mins

  • Director: Juraj Jakubisko
  • Writer: John Paul Chapple; Juraj Jakubisko
  • Producer: Mike Downey; Ivan Filus

CGiii Comment

An inaccurate, sprawling mess of a film that goes on and on and on.

It looks good - all quality, no substance.

Jakubisko seems to favour short scenes - some of them are very short indeed.

Divided into three parts - all of them are way too long and convoluted.

The potential to be something special was there....but, it fails on almost every level and quickly descends into a soapy-period-dubbed-dramatic catastrophe.

By the end, all integrity is lost and almost ends up becoming rather farcical.

Shame.
