CGiii Comment

The celebration of Our-Lady-of-the-Hens is an ancient ritual in which Catholicism merges with pre-Christian beliefs, such as the veneration of Mother Earth and the goddess Diana. It is celebrated every year, around Easter, in Pagani, in the province of Salerno. The ceaseless beat of the tammorra drum plays a crucial role in the dances and music that create the perfect setting for a transcendental ritual marking the rebirth of spring. A triumph of syncretism that weaves together the stories of the participants, who are volunteers or chosen by vote. Like Fonzino, the chosen one, who leads people during the construction of the Tosello, a secret temple consecrated to the Virgin Mary. Or Biagino, the head of the community of devout homosexuals and the protagonist of some of the more orthodox liturgical celebrations, which are, however, connected to ancestral pagan beliefs, such as the wedding of Zeza, the death of Carnival and the birth of Femminielli.
