Devotee

Country: France, Language: French, 50 mins

  • Director: Rémi Lange

CGiii Comment

Is it exploitative or insightful?

You decide - be prepared, it is a different world.

It has all the Lange trademarks - which is NOT a compliment - the sound is appalling, the direction is static and flat.

In more competent hands, this would have been a fine human interest story - instead, we are given an obtrusive invasion of privacy.

There are only two lines of merit and they are the last spoken - fast forward.

Lange's skill as a film-maker has not improved over time - possibly, it never will.

Perhaps it is now time to give up. [Yawn].

The(ir) Blurb...

Devotee is the story of Hervé, an assertive 43-year-old man who was born without arms or legs. He meets a gorgeous young man on line, a devotee (devoteeism or acrotomophilia) is the sexual attraction to people with amputations) who seems like he might be different. Their encounter proves Hervé's difficulty in finding a true connection with someone who is interested in treating him like a person rather than a mere fetish.
