Pride Denied: Homonationalism and the Future of Queer Politics

The first Pride was a riot, led by transgender women of colour against the police. 45 years on, Toronto hosted ‘World Pride’ – an event dripping with corporate sponsorship and marketed as a global equality celebration. Pride is at the heart of disagreements between those who fight for gays and lesbians to enjoy heterosexuals’ rights and privileges, and queers dismantling the inequalities intrinsic to our societies. ‘Pride Denied’ explores issues as diverse as Israeli homonationalism (promoting an image of gay friendliness in order to obscure human rights violations), white supremacy, and what constitutes a family.
