Fleeing a cavalry in pursuit, medieval King John V takes shelter in a cathedral where he meets a solitary priest. The group chasing him believe the King to be a madman, and he coerces the priest the scribe his farewell address before he is to meet his end. The story unfolds in this village where no one recognizes the King.
