CGiii Comment

Dickens!

Oliver Twist gets a radical re-working (again). And it's neither too imaginative nor that radical.

The acting leaves much to be desired - especially Fagin.

It has a school production feel to it - especially with the scenes in the abandoned-school-cum-hustler-squat.

Nothing rings true, it's too wordy, too polite, too faux dirty and, apologies, but Oliver is not as beautiful as he is made out to be.

Tierney does show promise - he manages to get a few good performances out of his actors.

The photography is respectable - it is an adequate debut to hone his skills but it does lack pace and falls a little flat.

Take more risks - especially when adapting an old classic - and, tidy up your endings.

Messy indulgence.

The(ir) Blurb...

A gay re-telling of Charles Dickens' classic Oliver Twist. Updated to current times, moved out of the poor house and onto the streets, the tale is told from the point of Dickens' character, Artful Dodger--now Dodge. The prosaically beautiful Oliver falls into the hands of down-and-out young men. Dodge takes the young man under his wing and instructs him in the unforgiving arts of drug abuse and prostitution. As Oliver's innocence dissolves, both young men confront inner and outer demons and, strangely, it is Dodge who finds he cannot escape his past.
