The first ever Mr. Gay China Competition! An event to show off the fashionable and sunny side of gayness in China! A contest filled with hot body boys! The announcement of the first ever Mr. Gay China Pageant sent flaming ripples throughout the gay community. Nervous talks ensued about who would be courageous enough to show off his homosexuality to a society where more than 90% of gay people remains firmly in the closet. 'Comrades, you've worked hard!' opens with organizers Ben, Niuniu and Ryan gearing up for the event. They manage to find 8 contestants, each with their own personal story on how and why they decide to jump into the public spotlights, and guide them through photo-shoots and interviews with a steadily increasing number of domestic and foreign media. The preparations heat up as the whole world starts to realize the importance of the event for China, which only abolished homosexuality as a crime in 1997 and only scrapped it from the official list of mental disorders in 2001.
Excitement grows as the start of the event approaches. But what was meant to be a climatic explosion of Chinese gay confidence, ends up being a political rebuttal of homosexuality. Just hours before the event is scheduled to start, the police burst into the pageant venue and force Ben, Niuniu and Ryan to cancel the event. What follows is a whirlwind of camera's and reporters, and a host of disappointed organizers and contestants who are trying to make sense of what this shut-down means for them personally and for the gay movement in China. 'Comrades, you've worked hard!' takes you on a rollercoaster ride into the heart of the Chinese gay movement, showing the emotional struggles of gay individuals who decide to make a public stance, and also giving you a glimpse of how the politically sensitive game of gay activism is played.
