CGiii Comment

This is an excerpt from the erotic drama MASKARADA ('Masquerade'), Yugoslavian director Bostjan Hladnik's 1971 tale of love, lust and blackmail in modern Slovenia. It stars Vida Jerman, Igor Galo and Miha Baloh. The film was banned in Yugoslavia until 1982, primarily due to it's explicit sexual nature and scenes of full-frontal nudity. Dina (Jerman), a beautiful, but bored, wife and mother, falls in love with Luka, a young student-athlete she has welcomed into her home.

Together, they carry on a torrid affair under the nose of her businessman husband (Baloh), and pubescent son -- a boy who's just beginning to realize his own sexual feelings for the attractive Luka. Hladnik was one of the founding fathers of the new wave 'Novi Film' movement, a cinema of political awareness in Yugoslavia, during the 1960s. Unlike his peers, Dusan Makavejev and Aleksandar Petrovic, Hladnik never seemed to entirely live up to the promise of his earliest films, despite a long and prolific career.

As a filmmaker, Hladnik often focused on matters of eroticism and taboo sensuality, and, like many of his works, MASKARADA depicts sexual relationships in a strikingly frank and open manner. The film was written by Vitomil Zupan. Jure Pervanje was the cinematographer, and Bojan Adamic composed the original musical score.
