CGiii Comment

It has to be said from the off...we here @CGiii are massive fans of Ferzan Ozpetek, his cinematic portfolio is the envy of many a filmmaker...and, a source of marvel for his audience.

Let's just call Naples in Veils a blip. Most directors make a bad film, the lucky ones blunder halfway through their career...those not-so-lucky make a terrible debut thereby ending their chosen career almost instantaneously. Mr Ozpetek is one of the lucky ones!

So...what's wrong with it? Well...it's a little difficult to put a finger on the exact problem...because, it's a little bit of this and a little bit of that. This is a film that can't commit...it's part neo-noir, part [half-baked] thriller, part psychological erotica, wholly fantastical and totally contrived...with head-scratching peculiarities running throughout. There are numerous of scenes that are just bamboozling and unnecessary...for example, a male actor gives birth to a blood-drenched doll...then, there's a bogus, bed-ridden, foul-mouthed, corpulent clairvoyant who spouts absolute drivel. And...let's not forget the conversation where everything is delcared to be 'gay'! Oh...and, the lesbians 'playing' with a mask.

Now...if you can grasp the love-at-first-bonk concept, followed by that first bonk's almost immediate [brutal] murder, followed by the cougar's insane grief [it was the best sex she had ever had]...then, Naples in Veils is the film for you!

There are a few twists and turns...but, nothing that really comes as a surprise until the very last one...sadly, that where the film ends...just as it started to get interesting!
