CGiii Comment

Elisabeth is a calm woman who lives her happiness as a loving mother and wife as something natural; the same way she lives her catholic faith. And she practices that faith in a radio show where she improvises dialogues with her listeners, who are upset by diverse everyday problems that find in this woman’s willingness a supposed light in the midst of their unease. But Elisabeth will not find the same ease in her words or those of the Catholic Church when she finds out, after the death of her husband in a strange accident in a peculiar hunting ground, that her youngest son is in love with a priest that she, in her infinite love, welcomed in her home. With the same calmness with which she shared her faith and love for her family, Elisabeth will take an unexpected path before the pact of silence the guardians of her god maintain for the sake of others.

There's hardly any material about this rabidly anticlerical film on the web; however, there’s a mention on the IMDB about the impossibility of releasing it in its country of origin due to the lobby by the Belgium’s Catholic Association. It sounds ridiculous that the clergy could have felt threatened by this perfectly constructed fiction, with some brilliant formal and narrative decisions and visual ideas that annihilate any possible attempt at a chronicle or a denunciation. Although, on second thought, what Lannoo’s film probably exposes, daringly and boldly, are two thousand years of ignominious silence and the fury such cruelty can trigger on its faithful servants.
