Something Must Break

A film that will definitely polarise...opinion.

Technically...it has moments of genius - let down by an infuriating ineptitude. The camerawork ranges from the inspired to the downright amateur...it is a film marred by inconsistency.

One minute you like Sebastian/Ellie - deftly played by Saga Becker - and then the next - you don't...any warmth you have for the character evaporates soon after it has been generated.

Yes...we are all looking for love and/or human warmth...but, would a trans-kid walk up to a complete [straight] stranger in the full stream of urinating in a toilet and proposition him without even contemplating the notion that this is unacceptable behaviour?!?

Sorry...but that deserves a slap. It's not homophobic, transphobic - it is a reaction to a sexual assault.

We get that transitioning is a madly complex and confusing process...but, does it have to be so selfishly self-centred? This film makes it so that it is nigh on impossible to feel the suffering of Sebastian...in that no-one else matters...whether it be a stranger, a friend, or relative.

Possibly...this was the intention...but, it does nothing to promote empathy for those in such chaos.

There was a damn fine film - in there somewhere - screaming to be seen - unfortunately, the inconsistencies got in the way.
