CGiii Comment

A wild imagining of a modern-day papacy...

Irreverent it may be...but, it certainly packs a series of knockout punches...a chain-smoking pope who doesn't really believe in God! An egocentric pope who follows - to the letter - the teachings of the bible...man shall not lie with man...this pre-posthumous, self-canonized man plans to rid the church of every homosexual...thereby ensuring the collapse of his catholic institution...his abuse of power is...

...well, there are moments when your jaw just hits the ground. Clunk.

Jude Law pulls it off...with his twinkling eye and slippery charm. Silvio Orlando's sly Voiello is a masterclass is cunning comedy...endearing and dangerous, he commands every scene he's in.

The production values are off-the-scale, no expense spared...Paolo Sorrentino has gotten all his grievances - with the church - off his chest. Of course it's going to anger 1 billion catholics...basically, because...it's so damned believable.

The corruption. The abuse. The pitiful piety.

The final episode is - quite literally - breath-taking. The emotion that systematically wells up as the pope derails and evolves is...staggering.

The Vatican must be reeling...for this is a palpable critique!
