Voices from the Front

Country: United States, Language: English, 90 mins

CGiii Comment

In 1988, thousands of AIDS activists stormed Washington, demanding quicker development and approval for curative drugs. The results of this activism -- or rather, the lack of results -- is the subject of the feature-length documentary Voices From the Front. Sandra Elgear, Robin Hutt and David Meiran, a filmmaking triumvirate known as Testing the Limits, scrutinize the sorry state of government health treatment for AIDS victims. Though the film does not completely avoid soapboxing, many of the vignettes are incredibly poignant, while others are bitterly funny. When first released in early 1992, Voices From the Front met with almost unanimous critical praise from both the gay and 'straight' press.
